Ford Aquatics Training Groups

Training Groups

At Ford, all swimmers (high school and older) train together.  We have 18 lanes for training short course, and 8 lanes for long course workouts.  Workouts are designed to give athletes the strength, endurance, and tools necessary to compete at the highest level.  Workouts are divided into groups, and intervals depending on your individual swimming goals, events, commitment level, and current level of development.  Different training groups include distance, antidistance (swimmers not focusing on distance events), breaststroke, and other stroke groups.  The workouts are designed to help athletes of all abilities progress through the season, while keeping long term development in mind.

    National Training Group

This group includes a commitment to Level 1 (see below) along with a commitment to the entire program as set up by the coaching staff.

    Senior Group

This group includes a commitment to Level 1 or Level 2 (see below).

Commitment Levels

Why Commitment Levels?  Commitment levels have been designed to help the coaching staff better understand your goals and commitment level to swimming during that season.  Committing to a specific level means that you are making at least that number of practices your goal during each week of that season.  It also means that you are responsible for that number of practices.  As with anything, the more practices you commit to attending, the more you will make.  As the amount of practice time goes up, the greater your potential for success within our program.
Evening Practices and the use of doubles      Evening practices are the main practice at Ford.  We start with 45min of dry-land, followed by a two hour session in the water.  Morning practices are shorter in length and should not be used on a regular basis to replace the missed main practice workouts that you committed to.

Goal Talks

Goal talks start the beginning of each season at Ford.  These one-on-one talks between the athlete and coach are designed to discuss individual short and long term goals.  During a typical goal talk, items discussed include event goal times, practice commitment, practice goals, academic goals, GPA and its long term importance.  In addition, we discuss changes that need to be made in the previous seasons training, commitment, attendance, or taper to help the athlete perform at a higher level in the upcoming season.  During an athletes junior and senior year, we also discuss swimming in college, and the recruiting process.

any road will take you there.

But once you know,

then it just takes hard work and perseverance."
